The ‘True Blood’ merchandise shop has been ram-raided to set dress Honest Burgers in Meard Street – even the waitresses haven’t been spared. True Blood, for the uninitiated is a supernatural drama series set in the American South and Honest burgers have collaborated with HBO to offer a limited edition special for one month to coincide with the series 5 DVD and Blue Ray launch.
The aptly named Louisiana Burger is really very, very good. But then the guys behind Honest Burgers clearly know their stuff, you simply can’t go wrong with a patty made of ‘Ginger Pig’ steak mince served juicy and pink. A soft brioche bun envelopes a thick disc of Cajun blackened beef which is nicely spiced, and holds its shape when you take your first bite until the moment you take your last. It’s stuffed with tasty-and-burger-necessary ingredients from perfectly fried onions, a slice from a generously sized beef tomato and just the right amount of blood leaf salad. And let me not forget the Bloody Mary ketchup. Accompanied by hand-cut chips with their jackets on, everything’s served in an enamelled dish. The potatoes are fried in what tastes and smells like rosemary-infused oil and post-fry, showered with just the right amount of salt. It’s worth a visit just to try these beauties. It’s the first time in a long time I’ve not asked for ketchup to dip my chips in – here it’s simply not necessary. A total bargain at £10.
For those who love a Bloody Mary – sorry I just can’t drink them, it’s a textural thing – they’re serving the burger with a fiery True Bloody Mary, (£6.50) mixed with Bloodshot Vodka, beef consommé, fresh horseradish, black pepper and a stick of celery.
Honest Burgers are serving the Louisiana Burger at both their Soho and Brixton restaurants until 17th June, details of both are on their website.
True Blood the Fifth Season is available on Blue-Ray and DVD.
Thanks to HBO and Honest Burgers for the invite.
