I know Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day isn’t about spending fortunes on Mums.
This annual spoiling is held on the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday. The Day pays tribute to Mother’s, Mother-in-Laws and often Grandmothers.
Depending on the age of the child, Mums could receive a glitter-laden card made in nursery or primary school. Mum is usually allowed a lie-in and when it’s time to wake up, there’s usually a breakfast tray of items which may include a wilting flower, cold toast, hard butter and plenty of jam but as they say, it’s the thought that counts. As you get a little older, the glitter-card is bought and the breakfast, turns into lunch or dinner.
Either way, your Mother will be really pleased to see you and if you have one anything like mine, if you turn up empty handed with only a card, it won’t matter at all.
If you want to arrive with an armful of gifts, haven’t had the time to think about Mother’s Day, then here are a few I’ve pulled together.

For jewellery lovers, you can’t beat Monica Vinader who have some well-priced pieces. This beautiful Alphabet Pendant, in sterling silver, is £65, without a chain, MV’s jewellery can be layered and added to for every occasion. They also have some pendants which are crying out for engraving. The lovely people there tell me it’s not too late to order a pendant that requires inscription as long as you choose nominated day delivery and order by 3 pm this Friday.

Another indulgence for me, is Aesop the Australian skincare range. Their hand balm is easily absorbed and takes away all the wrinkles, even if for a short time and moisturises the cuticles. Flowers are lovely but these alternative blooms are from Bloomon a relatively new company to the UK, but has been prolific in both the Netherlands and Germany. Their aim is to put an end to the pedestrian. Their elegant arrangements are delivered to your Mum straight from the farm door, which means they’ll last longer. If you want to surprise her with more than just a one-off bunch, they’ll deliver regularly, all you need to tell them is the size of bunch and the address to deliver.
If chocolate is your Mum’s thing then Hotel Chocolat takes some beating for off-the-shelf treats.
If you’re in London and want to take Mum for lunch, there are plenty of options around. D&D have got some solid restaurants in their group from Skylon on the South Bank to Sartoria on Regent Street and they’re all doing something rather special for Sunday 6th. For those on a tight budget, Marks and Spencer has some rather good gifts, and certainly ideas, for those who haven’t got lots of ‘pocket money’ to spend.
